Shopping in Paris tip#2: the iconic Repetto!
The story behind this brand is just how we would like every beautiful brand name to have started…
In 1947, after running a café in Montmartre (Paris), Rose Repetto opened a ballet shoe Atelier (workshop). She wasn’t a dancer herself but her son, Roland Petit, was. The young man asked his mother to make him a pair of ballet shoes. As loving as a mother can be, Rose patiently designed what she would call gloves for feet and succeeded in making shoes providing the total comfort and ultimate delicate beauty a dancer needs. The atelier and shop, near Opera on Rue de la Paix in Paris (see the pics in this post) was just the beginning of this growing empire. Rose maintained a really close relationship with all the dancers of the ballet, including big names such as the wonderfully innovative Maurice Béjart and the dancing genius Rudolf Nureyev. It seems that, by following the dancers and their art, she managed to develop her creations around them and keep up to date and even ahead of what was not only technical but also beautiful.
This is therefore a brand that I absolutely adore. I am the proud owner of a few pairs of Repettos of many different sorts! From baby Janes to ballerinas to real pale pink ballet pointes, these are shoes that have literally lasted forever in my wardrobe!
The shop on Rue de la Paix is just great. Spacious, it is a gallery of dozens of multicoloured dancing but also town shoes. I also pop into the smaller boutique in the Marais too but Rue de la Paix has a special soul to it, as the whole legend of Repetto all started there.
